Ramblings from Germany
Nick,

Since youwere a boxer I thought I would relate some storiesthat I remember from the 601st.

We had several boxers in the unit in 1953/54 and I remember some of their names. One was Rick Gomes from Conn. His brother was a pro and I saw him on TV. Another one was ? Baker who was a Golden Gloves Champion from Tx. They used to spar once in awhile when we were at Wasserkuppe. We also had a boxer from Fla. At Kuppe who was a real bad ass.. I cannot remember his name but one time we were drinking beer at a pub across from the site and he did some real damage to an English Airman. They had just transferred about 100 English up to Kuppe and we were informed thatwe were to be very polite to them.On of the English Airman from Wales was suppossed to be a real fighter and all the English Airmen were afraid of him.Well while we were drinking beer this English bad boy made the mistake of jumping on this guy from Fla. The guy from Fla. Hit him so hard he was out like a lite and before we could stop it the guy from Fla. Started kicking him in the head with his boob. Boy did he do a number on him.

There also was a cook from Penn. That was about half crazy and he got drunk and started chokeing another Airman. They broke it up and took him to the ordely room where he slugged the OD. The Sgt on duty pulled his 45 and told him he would blow a hole in him if he made another move. They put him in his room and locked the door and the next day took him away in a straight jacket.

We also had a Boxer at Kassel who was about half a loaf off. He was a Lt. In charge of recreation and one night at the officers club he slugged a Capt. We had a big black guy who was supposed to have been a sparing partner with a known heavey weight and they were having a match with the local Germans. They found out who hee was and refused to fight. Rather than to disapoint the crowd this Lt. Fought him and Koed him in the first round.

So much foor my Rambling today,. Was it not a joy to be is the 601st ha ha.
